Who is a Chartered Accountant (CA)?

A Chartered Accountant (CA) is a professional accountant who has earned the designation through education, training, and experience. In India, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is the regulatory body that governs the CA profession. CAs play a crucial role in various aspects of finance, taxation, audit, and advisory services.


Roles and Responsibilities of a Chartered Accountant
  1. Audit and Assurance: Conducting financial audits to ensure the accuracy of financial statements.
  2. Providing assurance on the reliability of financial information.
  3. Taxation: Advising on tax planning and compliance.
  4. Preparing and filing tax returns for individuals and businesses.
  5. Financial Reporting: Preparing and presenting financial reports in compliance with accounting standards.
  6. Advisory Services:  Offering financial advice on business strategies, investments, and risk management.
  7. Providing guidance on mergers and acquisitions.
  8. Management Accounting: Assisting organizations in making informed business decisions by analyzing financial data.
  9. Budgeting and forecasting.
  10. Forensic Accounting: Investigating financial discrepancies and fraud.  Providing expert witness testimony in legal proceedings.
  11. Compliance and Regulation: Ensuring compliance with various financial regulations and laws.

How to become a Chartered Accountant?

Step 1:  Register for the Common Proficiency Test (CPT):  After completing class 10th, register for the CPT with the ICAI.

The CPT is the entry-level examination for the CA course.

Step 2:  Appear for CPT:  After registration, appear for the CPT examination, which tests your proficiency in fundamental accounting concepts.

Step 3:  Enroll for Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC):  After passing the CPT, enroll for the IPCC, the next stage in the CA course.

Step 4:  Undergo Practical Training:  Complete a 3-year practical training period with a practicing CA or in an approved organization.

Step 5:  Appear for IPCC Exams:  Successfully clear the IPCC exams.

Step 6:  Enroll for CA Final Course:  After completing the IPCC, enroll for the CA Final course.

Step 7:  Complete Articleship:  Continue and complete the remaining period of articleship.

Step 8:  Appear for CA Final Exams:  Successfully pass the CA Final exams.

Step 9:  Attend Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills (AICITSS):  Complete the AICITSS during the last two years of practical training.

Step 10:  Become a Chartered Accountant:  After completing all the above steps and meeting the required criteria, you will be eligible to become a Chartered Accountant.
